INTERVIEW WITH ROMANCE AND EROTICA AUTHOR KYLE CANON

Natasha: Hi Kyle! Thank you for the interview. Can you tell our readers about yourself and how you got started as a writer?

Kyle Canon: Hi - My big secret is I’ve always wanted to be an author. I even wrote a travel blog for a few years then decided to try and write a sci-fi novel. I worked on it for months but just didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere. Then I read something from one of my favorite authors on his blog page. He said when he hit writer’s block he changed topics and genres to get a fresh start. It gave me an idea.

My wife, Lilly, and I had been exploring nudism and been to several naturist resorts. We enjoyed the lifestyle. Lilly was also modeling for me, I did a lot of photography for my blogs and she modeled through college so it was a natural. We started with some very artistic nudes then gradually progressed to more erotic sets. The photos were popular and sold well online. We were even approached to do some couples shoots. That was a big step for us. We’d been to nudist resorts but this would be different. Lilly would be doing erotic sets with male and female models while I directed them for a shoot. It took us a while to get there and a lot of conversations about our comfort zones when it came to sexually touching someone else.

So, back to writing. As all of this was going on I decided to change genres and write a story loosely based on our lives and experiences. I approached it almost like a journal of how I felt photographing Lilly with another man or woman as well as our discussions about swinging. By the time I wrote the book we’d learned a lot as we swapped with some friends and were considering how much more we wanted to do. I had a pretty good perspective on the lifestyle as a newcomer and I wanted to present it in a positive light.

I published that first novel, The Photographer’s Story and was pleasantly surprised by how well it was received. Interesting fact, Lilly is the model on the cover. Since then I’ve written another two novels, all part of the series and I’m working on one more. I’ve also published several short stories that explore the lifestyle.

Natasha: How would you describe your style of writing?

Kyle Canon: Erotic/Romance for the thoughtful reader. I didn’t want to just write like the old Penthouse Forum columns, those were always so contrived. I wanted to tell a story with my books and novellas. I have a few themes that run through most of my books. I like writing about strong women who are equal partners in their sexual experience. My couples are ‘normal’ people at various points of their discovery of swinging. They work through a process of discovery. Finally, their conversations are real, as real as I can make them and as I said, they reflect some of what Lilly and I have experienced.

All that said, I do write very explicit sex scenes. I consider that an integral part of any of my stories and don’t hold back. One of my favorite reviews on a book said that the reader had to stop every few pages for a breath. Loved it.

Natasha: When it comes to writing, do you have a certain routine or writing process that allows the ideas to flow better?

Kyle Canon: So much depends on what motivates me for a particular project. I usually take a few weeks mapping out an idea in my head. I may make some notes about the concept but generally just let it develop until I feel like I have to get my thoughts in print.

Once I start writing, I can sit for hours and get the basics written out. Then, I come back to it dozens of times adding dialogue and fixing grammatical issues. A few times I’ve completely rewritten whole chapters that just didn’t feel right. My final step is to have Lilly read a draft and give me some feedback. I know I’m onto something when that feedback leads to great sex.

Natasha: Let’s talk about your latest book, can you talk about how you came up with the title and a little about the story?

Kyle Canon: The Resort is my latest project due for publication on August 25. This is a concept that has been in the works for almost two years. The idea came from a conversation Lilly and I were having as we lay poolside at a nudist resort. I hate to give too many spoilers but the basic idea is that a very well endowed and friendly neighbor meets a couple who’ve been thinking about swinging for a few years. It is a short story but has a good amount of really hot sex. I knew it was good when Lilly finished reading it.

Natasha: What do you like about writing erotic stories?

Kyle Canon: It is a fun and daring way for me to explore some of our fantasies as well as reality. I also love the response from readers. One couple wrote to me, after leaving a glowing review, that my books helped them talk about their needs as a couple. That was flattering beyond belief.

I also want to leave a message that there is nothing wrong with sex or being attracted to someone who isn’t a spouse or significant other. That sort of thing is normal and healthy. Think #sexpositive.

Natasha: Who are the people who have been the most influential to you either personally or professionally? And why?

Kyle Canon: I always credit Lilly as my muse. She has been supportive and encouraging throughout my writing career. There have also been many friends we’ve met through resorts or my photography who’ve also encouraged me and been inspirations.

One, gave me a line I use in several books. She said people need to separate making love from sex. Sex is really just the ultimate massage while making love is something you do with a lifepartner. I know many who would argue the basic points there. For example, what if you love more than one person? Does that mean you are making love to both, or more? Bottom line, it is what you make of it.

Natasha: Let’s talk about your podcast. How long have you had your own podcast and what kind of content is featured?

Kyle Canon: As I am writing this our podcast is still in development. It is called Speak Seductively and will be focused on my books and things we’ve discovered about ourselves as we got into the lifestyle. Lilly and I have been doing live Twitter broadcasts, sort of along the same lines.

I also hope to interview erotic authors, romance authors and swingers to bring in some variety. We have four podcasts already recorded but want some in the library before we start our broadcasts. The first should be in late September.

Natasha: Besides writing, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time to relax?

Kyle Canon: I love the outdoors. Lilly and I camp and hike quite a bit. I’m also an avid scuba diver and have been diving for years. Some of my favorite locations are in the Keys but I’ve been diving in the Caymans and Hawaii. A dream of mine is to do the Great Barrier Reef.

Natasha: Can you share with our readers any future projects that you are working are?

Kyle Canon: Yes. I have a project I am very excited about. A few years ago Lilly dared me to write a short story on a holiday theme. I did, Naughty Christmas Cards, it was a lot of fun and since then I’ve used the holiday theme in a few short stories.

My current project ties into another halliday theme story. Last Halloween I wrote an erotic thriller called - Amber’s Erotic Possession. It was a huge hit, especially Lilly’s narration for the audible version. I’ve been writing a sequel which is nearly finished and should be ready for a mid-October release. The title is still a work in progress.

Natasha: How can our readers learn more about you and your books?

Kyle Canon: Thanks for asking. Right now all my books are published on Amazon and offered free if you have Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/by-Kyle-Canon/e/B07481T3S5/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0
