Scotland Vandal started writing stories at an early age. He enjoys writing drama, science fiction and fantasy themed genres. On a dare by a friend, Scotland decided to write sci-fi and paranormal erotica while also studying for a degree. Learn more about Scotland Vandal in his most recent interview with Bare Back Magazine.
NATASHA: Hi Scotland! Thank you for the interview. Can you tell our readers about yourself and how you got started as a writer?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: Since I was young, I liked to read fantasy and science fiction books, my favorite being The Shannara Chronicles and The Vampire Chronicles, by Terry Brooks and Anne Rice. I started writing when I was younger but only started thinking I could have a future in writing when I was in High School. Teachers would take extra time to tell me how much they liked the way that I wrote but obviously, it wasn’t about adult themed writing.
NATASHA: How would you describe your style of writing and what genre(s) do you write?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: I prefer to write drama, science fiction, and fantasy themed genres. I build upon my real-world experiences and blend it with my imagination.
NATASHA: How many books have you written so far?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: Officially, I’ve written only one and have it published but I’ve been writing on two screenplays and taking additional notes for other novella ideas.
NATASHA: When it comes to writing, do you have a certain routine or writing process that allows the ideas to flow better? Where do you get your ideas for your stories?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: There are times when I like to surround myself with people when I write and other times when I prefer a dark room with no one around. I also see scenes and situations when I hear music which, most of the time, inspires me to write something out.
NATASHA: Let’s talk about “Blood on The Cedar: Erotic Vampire Tale” The title is very intriguing, and I love the book cover. Can you talk about how you came up with the title and a little about the story?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: I’ve been told by many people that I should write my ideas out and when it came to past girlfriends, they told me that I should be an erotic writer. I always just did it for fun and to capture their attention. A coworker and friend of mine saw some of the writing that I was doing and more or less dared me to write something out. I figured why the hell not and I needed a break from the school work I was doing for a degree.
As far as the title, I came up with it with so many cedar trees around me and a river nearby named for them. As much as I am drawn to the darkness of the imagination, I am drawn just as much to nature.
NATASHA: How would you describe yourself and your personality in one word?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: Tempered.
NATASHA: Are you like any of the characters that you write about?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: One character from “Blood on the Cedar: Erotic Vampire Tale,” yes, but I won’t say which (there’s only three major characters so it’s not hard to figure out. I do put myself in the shoes of some of my characters which I don’t think can be avoided.
NATASHA: Besides writing, what do you enjoy doing on your spare time to relax?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: Right now, reading articles online and books from my past. I also like reading Greek mythology every so often and learning about story structure. I’ve only recently gotten back into gym activities to help clear my mind from stress.
NATASHA: Can you share with us anything you are currently working on, and/or any new releases? Social media links or websites?
SCOTLAND VANDAL: I don’t follow up much with social media or have any websites. I am currently a student waiting to hear back from a few schools that I have picked to attend for next year so that is my focus. I have several other book ideas to be fleshed out more before I can really talk about them, but they vary from young adult fantasy to contemporary science fiction.
