BARE BACK MAGAZINE'S INTERVIEW WITH ROMANCE AUTHOR: Isabel Jolie

NATASHA: Hi Isabel! Thank you for the interview. Can you tell our readers about yourself and how long have you been a writer?

ISABEL: Hi Natasha- thanks for having me on your site! I’m a relatively new writer. This is my second year publishing, and Rogue Wave will be my sixth book. I live just outside of Charlotte, NC on a lake. I’m married and have two daughters (12 and 14 yrs old). I’ve worked in a variety of industries, and currently work from home. I’m still not at the point where I make a “livable wage” from writing.

NATASHA: When it comes to writing, do you have a certain routine or writing process that allows the ideas to flow better?

ISABEL: I work from a loose outline, and I find this helps because when I sit down to write, I have a plan. I make every effort to preserve writing time each day- I treat it like my job, which it is. When I finish writing a scene or chapter, before I stop for the day, I’ll always think about what’s next and make notes, so when I come back the next day, it’s easier for me to pick back up and move forward in the story.

NATASHA: Can you tell our readers about your latest book? And how did you come up with the title?

ISABEL: Rogue Wave is the first title in the Haven Island series. It’s about a conservationist who has become disillusioned after years upon years out at sea. After he inherits his grandmother’s beach house, he comes to the island with plans to repair it and figure out what’s next. On the island he meets a young grad student who reminds him of how he used to be. It’s an age gap romance, but really it’s a philosophical gap romance too, as they both are at different stages of their lives and they see things differently.

When I brainstormed titles for the series, I started off by looking at Jack Johnson song titles. Probably NOT a recommended way of coming up with title names. I had potential names on index cards in front of my desk for weeks. At the end of the day, I don’t think Rogue Wave was a song title, but rather, it was a surfing term from a research article. Rogue Wave stuck because both Tate and Luna are surfers, and Luna comes into Tate’s life like a rogue wave. She’s unexpected, and he struggles with how to react. Plus, some aspects of his past come back at him in unexpected ways too.

The second title in the series, Adrift, I do believe stems from a Jack Johnson tune. The third book, Rough Waters, was also song-inspired, but I’m leaning towards changing the name to First Light, which is a military term, and overall, sounds far more positive and uplifting than Rough Waters. I bounce around on titles. I need a better system.

NATASHA: What attracted you to the genre(s) you write in?

ISABEL: I love contemporary romance. I am always reading. So, I suppose I write what I love. I enjoy contemporary romance because it’s a love story, but the stories I’m particularly drawn to are relevant to our time and expose alternative points of view, and I often find I learn a little something. So, it’s entertainment, but it’s also eye-opening.

NATASHA: Are any of your characters based on real people you know?

ISABEL: No, I’ve never done that. I pointedly avoid basing any characters on real people in my life. Actually, I take that back. One of my aunts was an English teacher, and she was one of the first people to support my pursuit of writing. When I was in high school she asked me to be sure to include her in a book if I ever became a writer - and to make her tall and skinny. In one of my books, Walk the Dog, the heroine has an aunt (tall and skinny) who I wrote with my Aunt in mind. Although, you can’t really say the character is based on her - I just made her a kick ass woman in honor of my aunt, who is a kick ass woman.

NATASHA: If a film were made of your book, who would you cast in the leading roles?

ISABEL: Oh, I love questions like this. So fun to play pretend casting director. Henry Cavill would be the hero, Adrian Tate. And I think maybe Elle Fanning as Luna.

NATASHA: Besides writing, what do you enjoy doing on your spare time to relax?

ISABEL: My absolute favorite thing to do to relax is to uncork a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and nibble on a charcuterie board, and I love doing this with my husband and/or friends. My favorite exercise options are rowing, tennis and kickboxing. Walking my dog is also relaxing, and I usually wear the giant Beats and listen to an audiobook as I do so.

NATASHA: Can you share with our readers any future projects that you are working on?

ISABEL: My work in progress is a spin-off of the Haven Island series. The first book will take place in Sonoma Valley, CA, and it features a reformed hacker and a bookstore owner. The Twisted Vines series will follow the men and women who form a secret group within the US focusing on cybersecurity- more or less, sexy nerds, some with military backgrounds, some without.

Eloise switched on the television. She didn’t remember the last time she ate or showered and had no desire to start functioning again. She pulled the blanket up around her neck as the doorbell rang. Rossi jumped up and started barking. Eloise placed her hand on top of Rossi’s head. Whoever it was could leave their “I’m sorry” and their stupid-ass lasagna tray on the porch and leave. Eloise turned up the volume and ignored the knocking that followed the doorbell. Rossi stayed standing, but quiet.

“Eloise! Open the door, please. I know you’re home.” The voice was followed by more pounding and Eloise clicked the remote volume up three more notches.

Maybe one of the neighbors will call the police and complain, she thought.

“Eloise, it’s Jack.” The noise stopped and she felt as though the wind had been permanently knocked out of her. She froze, waiting to see if the silence would stay. It didn’t.

“Eloise, open the damn door.” The male voice roared through the entryway and Eloise’s breath hitched. It couldn’t be him. She hadn’t heard that voice in ten years and yet the sound of it made her feel like she’d never gone without it.

Eloise stood and wrapped the blanket around herself tighter, hoping it would magically become a shield. She debated not opening the door, but if Jack was anything like he used to be, he wouldn’t go away. Eloise would probably leave a month from now and find he’d been living on her porch. Rossi rose with Eloise and matched her stride. Eloise took a quick glance in the mirror hanging in her entryway, knowing full well she could pass for a person who’d been sleeping behind a dumpster, and then swung the door open.

Jack. A man Eloise hadn’t seen or spoken to in ten years. He straightened from his leaning position over her window. He stood too tall, too straight. His feet spread apart too evenly. Rossi moved to place her body between Eloise and Jack, shifting her gaze from Eloise to Jack.

“Eloise.” One word, then Jack snapped his mouth shut. Eloise closed her eyes and waited for him to look her over. She knew he would. “I wish there was something to say, but I know nothing will make this any easier.” Jack’s voice was this cross between being out of breath and a whisper, and Eloise wondered where the screaming madman he was a second ago went.

“Why are you even here?” Eloise noted Jack locking his fingers in front of his waist. He looked different and exactly the same.

Four months, three weeks, and two glorious days had passed since Saskia had run off with twelve million dollars of Lachlan's money while Joseph Quill's nude remained unmolested at the Raine Estate. Even with sunglasses, she had to shield her eyes against the blazing sun at Venice's Piazza San Marco, or as the locals called it, la Piazza.

She never tired of coming here. On first arriving, she'd bought up every tourist-y book she could get her hands on and learned everything she could. The Piazza San Marco had supposedly once been called the drawing room of Europe by Napoleon. Whether he'd truly said it or not could never be proven, but it felt true nonetheless. This place kept drawing her back to it.

After a couple months of traveling and seeing everything she could think to cram into that time—every famous art museum and gallery dotted across the world—she'd finally settled back in Venice. The tropical island idea had gotten boring after two weeks. Italy was where she belonged. It was an artist's paradise.

Sometimes she liked to sit inside St. Mark's Basilica, staring up at the awe-inspiring gold mosaics so long it made her neck hurt. Even with tourists fluttering about, the space felt sacred. But even inside a church as grand as St. Mark's, Saskia had barely a flutter of guilt about her crime. Why should she? Lachlan had billions. Twelve million was so laughable he wouldn't have missed it if she'd taken it right out of his bank account while he looked the other way.

"Having fun, Miss Roth?"

That voice.

Saskia considered running, screaming, anything but turning around to confirm who she knew stood just behind her, his hot breath mixing with the warm breeze against her neck.

She exhaled.

People ran into people—even in Venice. There was no reason to think he knew...

"If you run, I'll have you arrested."

Okay, so he knew.

When she finally turned, he looked far more smug and self-satisfied than a man who's learned he's been robbed should look. He wore a crisp, dark suit and appeared as if he were on his way to a funeral. Hers, maybe?

"How did you find me?"

"Why don't we have this discussion at that lovely expensive villa you bought with my money? It's not far from here, is it?"

She'd just bought it a month ago.

"No, Mr. Niche."

"Oh, it's Mr. Niche, now. So formal. You think the formality will do you any good?"

His hand slid into hers, and for the first time in their association, she didn't pull away from his touch. Maybe he could be reasoned with. He might make good on his arrest threat. But then again he might kill her if he got her somewhere private. Maybe she should take her chances with the police. Which option would be worse? Which might save her?

"Just relax," he whispered. "I'm not going to hurt you. Much."

It was close enough to walk, though each step dragged so that it seemed impossible one could span the distance by foot—even though she'd done it easily just that morning.

Her hand trembled when she tried to put the key in the door.

Lachlan's fingers closed over hers. "Relax," he said again as if simply repeating the word would have any effect on the way everything inside her convulsed over what he might do with her now that he'd isolated her from possible witnesses. He unlocked the door with a steady hand and walked in like he owned it.

And really, he kind of did.

"Not bad," he said. "But I can tell you with this kind of money management you'd be a starving artist again inside of three years. Why don't we sit out beside the pool?"

"So you can drown me more easily?"

He laughed, and the tightly bound breath that had been stuck inside Saskia's chest came rushing out. Surely he wouldn't laugh like that if he planned to kill her. It wasn't an evil laugh; it wasn't even a sleazy laugh. It was... musical somehow.

And all at once the guilt appeared.

'Have I been dehumanizing him this whole time just so I could steal from him?' It wasn't a pretty thought. It didn't match the trees and clouds and sky and all the beautiful old buildings that seemed like art installations on their own. There was no denying how uncomfortable he made her. And that one day in his study when he'd touched her inappropriately—she hadn't imagined that. But beyond that one moment, had she created the image of a monster for her own convenience?

"Did you paint the trompe l'oeil on the walls yourself?"

"I did."

"It's good."

Saskia tried not to let the compliment affect her. Who cared what Lachlan thought about it? She remained unconvinced he'd know real art on his own if it bit him on the dick. She followed him to the terrace and sat in the chair he indicated. He reclined next to her and watched her for several minutes—so long she couldn't stand the scrutiny and silence any longer.

"Lachlan, I'm sorry, I..."

He held up a hand. "No. You're not sorry. You're sorry you got caught. You'd rob me blind again if you thought you'd get away with it."

A fair point.

"Holding back and giving me a lower quality forgery the first time was a nice touch. Lesser men might have been fooled. How much of my money have you spent?"

"Six million," she mumbled.

"I'm sorry, what was that?" "Six million. H-half of what you gave me."

"A three-year countdown to your renewed destitution was generous. I give it two, tops. Were you planning to invest any of it? Even millions run dry if you just keep spending." "I wanted to travel and get settled first."

He nodded as if any of this mattered now. It was all just trivia of a life that could have been.

She wondered how many lives that could have been would be dangled in front of her and then ripped away before her true fate unfolded. The fantasy of the fairy tale with Eric, the illusion of this independent life in a villa in Venice... both lovely ideas, both impossible dreams.

"So, you owe me six million dollars."

"I'll sell the villa, and..."

He twisted his chair to face her. "No. That's not the deal. You stole from me; I decide the terms. I want a wire transfer by the end of the day in the full amount."

"But you know I can't..." It was ridiculous for him to demand she return the money on such short notice. It took time to sell a villa. And the furniture. And the Ferrari—which had already depreciated. She didn't want to think about the amount she wouldn't be able to get back—the small things that added up. Clothes. Jewelry. And the intangibles: spa appointments, all the travel.

"So we'll handle it the old-fashioned way. You will indenture yourself in servitude to me to pay off your debt—likely for the rest of your life given the amount of money anyone would reasonably pay you for anything you're actually qualified to do."

Just what he'd wanted all along: her at his mercy in a compromising position where she'd have to warm his bed to survive. It was no doubt like winning the lottery for him. He knew everything could be bought, even her—given the right circumstances. And here the circumstances were, wrapped up and gleaming.

Saskia wasn't unattractive, but she knew there were other women more beautiful than her. The appeal to him was acquiring something that was difficult to acquire—just like all the art he collected. If she'd been eager to jump in bed with him, he wouldn't want her. Was that worse or better?

"And if I don't agree to your terms, you'll what? Kidnap me? Exactly how would your felony cross out my felony?"

He laughed. It was decidedly less endearing this time around. "I'll turn you over to the authorities. You can go to prison, or you can give yourself to me. The accommodations with me will be better."

"But not the company."

Lachlan's eyes narrowed. "I'm going to do something about that smart mouth of yours the moment we get home."

BARE BACK MAGAZINE REVIEW: BATWOMAN SEASON 2

On January 17, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time CW (WPIX) premiered the highly-anticipated second season of Batwoman starring Javicia Leslie (Ryan Wilder) as the new Batwoman. It was a historic moment on television because Javicia became the first Black Batwoman, and it happened on the same week that Kamala Harris became the first Black female Vice President of the United States. The new season was fresh, dark, filled with twist and turns, and fun to watch. The casting of Javicia Leslie as Batwoman was a great choice because she fit the role well. I’m glad they created a new character for Javicia to make her own instead of doing a recast.

The episode started with a tragedy. Ryan Wilder, 25, was sleeping in her home, which was a van by Gotham’s harbor. Her sleep was interrupted by a nearby plane crash. As she surveyed the plane wreckage, she came across debris, a few lifeless bodies and an elderly African-American man whom she saved by performing CPR on him. Ryan also find Kate Kane’s Batsuit that she took back to her home.

The police were at the scene. Kate’s father, Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott), leader of the Crows arrived and was informed that Kate Kane’s body was not recovered, which gave him hope that his daughter was still alive. With Crows agent Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy), they both searched the area for Kate’s body. Observing the scene from afar was the leader of the Wonderland gang Alice (Rachel Skarsten). She seemed to be livid about the plane crash.

Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) soon realized that Kate Kane was on the plane that crashed. Her body and Batsuit was nowhere to be found. At Wayne Enterprises, they encountered “Brue Wayne” who had been missing for four years. They were both surprised to see him. Bruce showed concern over his missing cousin. Mary left to go meet up with her father while Luke stayed with Bruce. He found it odd that Bruce didn’t know how to enter the Batcave, which should have been a red flag that he might not be the real Bruce Wayne. However, Bruce Wayne convinced Luke to give him the kryptonite.

As the episode progressed, we found out that the man parading as Bruce Wayne was really Tommy Elliot a.k.a. Hush. He took full advantage of Bruce Wayne’s billionaire playboy lifestyle that Alice saw as a distraction. Alice transformed Tommy’s face to perfectly resembled Bruce Wayne. She gave Tommy Elliot Bruce’s face so he could procure kryptonite for her that she would then give to Jacob, who would kill Batwoman. Alice was distraught about Kate Kane’s apparent death because she wasn’t the person that did the job. Her plan for familial revenge was now ruined. Hush reminded Alice that she could have shot Kate months ago. Alice told him that she had it all planned out, calculated and precise. She also reminded Tommy that she’ll make him go from Bruce Wayne back to his disfigured self.

While speaking to her counselor, Susan Stevens, Ryan Wilder explained her troubled past. Her birth mom died in childbirth and her dad wasn’t around. She was raised in the system and experienced trauma early in her life. She and her foster mother moved to a nice apartment, but squatters attacked them, and her foster mother died. Ryan had been wrongfully imprisoned for 18 months by Jacob Kane’s Crows. Because of her criminal record, she couldn’t land a job or pay her court fees, which explained her being homeless.

Unbeknownst to Ryan, when she activated the Batsuit it triggered the GPS system. Therefore, Luke and Mary were able to tracked her down in a tunnel. To their surprise, it was not Kate, and the new Batwoman revealed that she saw Kate’s plane crashed. She also introduced herself as Ryan. Luke and Mark asked for the Batsuit back, Ryan refused and delivered this instant classic line, “I know I'm not a symbol — I'm the 327th baby of a Black woman died that year. I'm 20 a day check to a group home. I'm inmate 4075 serving 18 months. But to the mama who adopted me? I was her #1…You can have this damn suit back when her killer is dead.” Before she launched herself in the air and out of view.

News of Kate Kane’s plane crash went public. A front-page newspaper article asked the question, “What Happened to Kate Kane?”, which the episode was titled. Most believed she has gone missing due to the plane crash. Jacob Kane still felt his daughter was still alive even though a similar situation happened with his other daughter years ago. Luke also believed Kate was dead and blamed himself for her passing since he encouraged her to fly to National City to meet up with Supergirl about the shard of kryptonite in her possession. Mary was more hopeful and believed Kate could have survived the plane crash without wearing the Batsuit.

While Ryan read an article on Kate Kane in the Gotham City Gazette, Mary did research on her, and learned about Ryan’s trouble past. She discovered that Alice’s Wonderland gang was responsible for her mother’s death. Coincidentally, both of their mothers were killed by Alice and her gang. Mary came to the conclusion that Ryan was keeping the Batsuit to get revenge on Alice. She wants justice!

Julia informed Luke and Mary that Bruce was not Bruce, but was Hush because of the fingerprints she obtained at Crows Headquarters. The news shocked them. Meanwhile, Bruce was in the Batcave and noticed the Batsuit was activated. Once he finds the Batmobile, he hopped in and drove off just as Luke and Mary returned to the Batcave. Luke knows that Bruce wants Ryan for the suit. Therefore, he contacted Ryan and told her that Bruce wants the suit and if he gets it, he’ll become the most powerful person in Gotham City. So, Bruce Wayne who wasn't Bruce Wayne was going after Batwoman who wasn't Batwoman in the Batmobile to get the Batwoman suit back to change it back into Batman suit so he can become Batman. I know it’s frightfully complexing. Ryan finally encountered Bruce and they engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Tommy shot Ryan with a kryptonite bullet in her shoulder, but she managed to survive and pounded him to a pulp that left him unrecognizable. After the battle, Ryan returned the Batsuit and kryptonite to Luke and Mary at Wayne Enterprises. She said she was sorry about Kate and that she hopes they find her. The Batsuit is bigger than her, and she’s not a superhero like Kate. Julia finally gave Sophie what Kate left in her safe. It was an envelope addressed to her. The letter confirmed that Kate was Batwoman, and she didn’t tell Sophie because she loved her and wanted to protect her. Jacob was distraught about learning that Kate Kane was Batwoman and she died knowing he hated her. He made one last attempt to contact Batwoman by illuminating the sky with the iconic Bat-Signal, but Batwoman never showed up.

As Alice roamed in the dark tunnels of Gotham City, she was still unsure of the person who’s responsible for Kate’s death. As if her prayers been answered, a paper plane flied near her and written on it read, “Consider us even, Safiyah,”. She lay down beside Mouse and began plotting her war on Gotham.

The final scene captured Ryan looking up at the sky and gazed at the Bat signal. She looked down and spoked to her plant because it was like talking to her mom since it's hers, and told it that she did the right thing and will try to continue to do so before looking down at her wound. It was green and seemed like it was traveling in her system. The premiere was really good. The intertwining storylines and relationships were really well positioned to set up the new season. Javicia Leslie slayed as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman and I’m looking forward to her first interaction with Alice!
